Gb Surf School Coaching and Lesson Structure

Coaching and Lesson Structure

Anyone who can swim 50 metres or more confidently and unaided, regardless of age, can take part in a surf lesson.

However, our Coach / Student ratios are as follows:

Groups of 7 years old and under - 1:4 - meaning these lessons are more expensive at £40 per lesson

Groups of age 8 to 11 - 1:8

Groups of age 12 and above: 1:10

How does it work?

We are a mobile surf school based in Marazion, near Penzance, West Cornwall. We travel to the beaches with the best conditions on the day for the level of surfers we have booked in. We have all the equipment on board; surfers simply need to bring a towel, swimsuit to wear under the wetsuit we provide, and perhaps a snack for after. And a smile!

Call us on 01736 711289 to talk about your requirements and to book a lesson. We will then go through a booking form with you over the phone.

The day before your lesson we'll call you and tell you where your lesson will be. It will nearly always be either at Gwithian on the north coast, at Hayle, or Praa Sands on the south coast. We also use Sennen, Portreath, Perranporth, Mounts Bay and Fistral if we need to.

We'll be ready to meet you at the beach 15 minutes before your lesson; look out for a Global Boarders / GB Surf School van at the point where you have been told to meet us. We will issue you with a clean wetsuit and an appropriate surfboard for your size and experience.

Transfers are available on occasion; contact us on 01736 711289 or surfing@gbsurfschool.com for details.

Meet the instructors here!

Lessons follow the following format:

  • We start with an overview of the basic safety instructions we'll be using including whistle blows and hand signals allowing at all times for you as GB Surf School guests to have fun in the safest environment possible.
  • We follow with an explanation of the equipment that we are using.
  • We then explain the basic handling of the board.
  • We'll give you a brief overview of the local environment and how we as surfers care for it
  • Then we'll get into the sea, get out to the right depth, show you how to turn the board and start catching waves!

From standing we will aim to get you:

  • Making 'angled take offs' allowing you to progress along the wave instead of straight in.
  • Gaining a better understanding of how the board is working under your feet, i.e. the transfer of balance to speed up or slow down and utilising this to help you turn.
  • Depending on personal ability we can then move on to riding 'green waves' (now we are really surfing!) - the art of riding unbroken waves.
  • For the total natural at this stage we can start to turn on the face of the wave and hang out in the green room!

It is as easy as it sounds, we promise!

As with any tuition given by our instructors, lessons are entirely guest led allowing for a comfortable and productive surfing session. We will always follow the most useful and progressive surf tuition package allowing for you to achieve a basic level of surfing which you can then progress in your own time or come back and visit us again. You'll leave with a huge smile on your face and a newfound passion for surfing!
